Ever realize you’ve been clenching your jaw while doing absolutely nothing that requires your jaw? Answering emails. Sitting in traffic. Reading that group text.
Your jaw apparently has opinions.
But when tension turns into ongoing soreness or discomfort while chewing, it deserves some attention. September is Pain Awareness Month, so we’re giving jaw pain a little space in the conversation.
EMFACE Functional TMJ is an FDA-cleared, noninvasive treatment for TMJ dysfunction and associated pain. Its cleared uses include relieving muscle spasms, supporting muscle re-education, and maintaining or improving jaw movement. Whether it’s appropriate for you depends on what’s causing your symptoms.
People often use “TMJ” to describe jaw pain, although TMJ actually refers to the joints connecting your lower jaw to your skull. Problems involving those joints and surrounding muscles are called temporomandibular disorders, or TMD.
Symptoms may include sore jaw muscles, stiffness, painful clicking, or difficulty opening your mouth comfortably. However, clicking without pain is common and usually doesn’t need treatment.
The treatment combines radiofrequency warmth with HIFES muscle stimulation. Together, these technologies help address muscle spasms, support local circulation, and encourage better jaw muscle function. No needles or surgery involved.
The goal? More comfortable everyday movement. Because eating lunch shouldn’t feel like an assignment.
A typical EMFACE series involves four 20-minute sessions, generally scheduled a week apart. During treatment, you’ll feel warmth and muscle contractions, and there’s no planned downtime. Your provider will tailor the plan to your needs, and results vary.
Before getting started, we’ll review your health history and whether treatment is appropriate for you. Although EMFACE is noninvasive, it has contraindications and potential side effects, including skin injury, that your provider should discuss with you.
Does EMFACE cure teeth grinding?
EMFACE should not be considered a cure for teeth grinding. Its cleared uses address TMJ dysfunction, associated pain, and muscle function. Grinding may require a separate dental assessment and care plan.
Does every sore or clicking jaw need EMFACE?
No. Painless clicking usually doesn’t need treatment, and some jaw problems improve with simple measures. An evaluation helps determine whether dental care, physical therapy, or another approach makes sense.
Not every sore jaw has the same cause. That’s why an evaluation matters, especially if pain persists or your jaw locks.
