If you have ever Googled “how to get rid of stubborn belly fat” at 11 p.m., welcome. You are among friends.
You eat well. You move your body. You may even have a long and complicated relationship with squats. Yet, certain areas of fat seem to have signed a long-term lease.
For years, CoolSculpting has been one of the most recognized names in non-surgical fat reduction. However, body contouring technology has continued to evolve.
Enter ONDA PRO.
At The Peak Wellness Spa in North Scottsdale, we introduced ONDA PRO as the first provider in Arizona to offer this third-generation technology from Italian medical aesthetics company DEKA.
So, what is the difference between ONDA PRO and CoolSculpting?
The short answer is simple. CoolSculpting freezes fat. ONDA PRO uses targeted microwave energy to address localized fat, cellulite and skin laxity.
The longer answer is a little more interesting.
CoolSculpting uses a technology called cryolipolysis, which uses controlled cooling to target fat cells beneath the skin.
During treatment, the technology cools and freezes fat cells in a specific area. Over the following weeks and months, the body gradually processes those treated fat cells. CoolSculpting focuses on reducing visible fat bulges in specific treatment areas and does not serve as a weight-loss treatment.
In other words, CoolSculpting focuses primarily on one goal: targeting localized fat through freezing. And yes, it was a big deal when it entered the body contouring world. However, fat is not always the only thing people want to address.
Sometimes the conversation is also about skin texture. Or cellulite. Or skin laxity. Or that frustrating combination of all three.
That is where ONDA PRO takes a different approach.
ONDA PRO is a non-invasive face and body contouring technology developed by DEKA in Italy.
Instead of freezing fat cells, ONDA PRO uses patented Coolwaves microwave technology and Precision-GigaWave technology to deliver targeted energy into specific tissue depths.
Different handpieces allow providers to focus on specific concerns, including localized fat, cellulite and skin laxity. DEKA developed its shallow handpiece to target cellulite, skin tightening and localized adiposity, while the deep handpiece focuses on larger areas of localized fat.
Translation? It is not just a fat conversation.
With ONDA PRO, we can look at the area more completely.
Is there stubborn fat? Is the skin beginning to look loose or crepey? Is cellulite creating dimpling or uneven texture?
Often, the answer is, “Well… all of the above.” Welcome to being human.
The biggest difference between ONDA PRO and CoolSculpting is the type of energy each technology uses and the tissue concerns each treatment targets.
CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling to freeze and eliminate treated fat cells.
ONDA PRO uses targeted microwave energy designed for non-invasive body shaping, localized fat, cellulite and skin laxity.
Therefore, the better question may not be, “Which device removes fat?”
Instead, ask: What exactly are we trying to improve?
This is one of the biggest reasons we were interested in ONDA PRO at The Peak. Cellulite is not simply “extra fat.”
The dimpled appearance of cellulite also involves connective tissue and the structure beneath the skin. That is why losing weight does not always make cellulite disappear.
ONDA Coolwaves technology targets subcutaneous tissue and connective structures associated with cellulite. Researchers have also studied microwave energy for cellulite and localized adiposity. Published clinical recommendations describe microwave energy being used to target subcutaneous tissue and connective structures associated with cellulite.
So, if your concern is the back of the thighs, buttocks or another area where fat and cellulite are both part of the conversation, ONDA PRO may offer a more comprehensive treatment approach.
Because sometimes you do not just want smaller thighs. You want smoother-looking thighs. There is a difference.
Again, this is where treatment planning matters. You can reduce fat and still be unhappy with an area if the skin looks loose. In fact, this is something we talk about frequently with our patients in Scottsdale.
As we age, collagen production changes. Weight fluctuations, hormonal changes and natural aging can also affect the appearance and elasticity of the skin.
ONDA PRO technology is designed to deliver energy at targeted tissue depths. According to DEKA, the technology can act on collagen fibers while stimulating new collagen production, supporting a more compact and toned appearance.
Therefore, when we evaluate an area, we are not simply asking, “How much fat is here?” We are also looking at skin quality, texture and laxity.
That changes the treatment conversation.
No. ONDA PRO does not use cryolipolysis or fat freezing. Instead, ONDA PRO uses targeted microwave energy.
CoolSculpting selectively freezes fat cells. ONDA PRO delivers microwave energy to targeted tissue depths based on the treatment area and handpiece being used.
So, while both technologies may be discussed in the world of non-surgical body contouring, they work very differently.
Think of it this way: Same neighborhood. Different houses.
For someone researching non-surgical fat reduction in Scottsdale, ONDA PRO may be considered an alternative to CoolSculpting.
However, we would not say the treatments are identical. CoolSculpting is focused on cryolipolysis and the reduction of visible fat bulges. ONDA PRO allows us to build a treatment plan around localized fat, cellulite and skin laxity.
For that reason, someone concerned about stubborn abdominal fat plus loose-looking skin may have different goals than someone who simply wants to reduce a specific fat bulge. Similarly, a patient concerned about cellulite on the thighs may require a completely different approach.
That is why we are big believers in consultation before treatment. Your body is not a template. Your treatment plan should not be one either.
Like any aesthetic treatment, non-invasive body contouring technologies have potential risks and side effects. The FDA discusses a rare complication associated with cryolipolysis called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, or PAH. With PAH, fatty tissue in the treated area grows instead of shrinking. The FDA notes that the condition may require surgical treatment.
This does not mean every person who receives CoolSculpting will experience PAH. It is considered a known potential adverse event associated with cryolipolysis. However, it is one reason patients should understand how a technology works, its potential risks and whether it matches their goals before choosing a body contouring treatment.
More technology is not automatically better. The right technology for the right person is better.
Here is the answer people hate to hear from us. It depends.
We know. Very anticlimactic. However, the best non-surgical body contouring treatment depends on your anatomy, skin quality, treatment area and goals.
If your primary concern is a visible pocket of fat, cryolipolysis may be one technology you research.
On the other hand, if you are concerned about a combination of localized fat, cellulite and skin laxity, ONDA PRO may be worth considering.
At The Peak Wellness Spa, our goal is not to put every patient on the newest device simply because it is new. Instead, we look at the person standing in front of us.
What bothers you? What does the tissue actually look and feel like? Is fat the primary concern? Is cellulite involved? What about skin laxity?
Once those questions are answered, a personalized treatment plan can be created.
We are picky about technology at The Peak. Very picky. There are a lot of devices in aesthetics. Some are exciting. Some are heavily marketed. Some make very big promises. We look for technology that fills a real need for our patients.
ONDA PRO caught our attention because it gave us another way to approach body contouring beyond simply freezing fat.
The ability to evaluate localized fat, cellulite and skin laxity fits the way we already approach wellness and aesthetics at The Peak.
We want to look at the whole picture. That is also why we were excited to introduce ONDA PRO to Arizona.
As the first ONDA PRO provider in Arizona and the 13th location in the country to introduce the technology, we have been able to bring this next generation of non-invasive face and body contouring to North Scottsdale.
And yes, we have been treating a lot of stomachs, thighs, arms and those stubborn little areas that seem completely unimpressed by your Pilates membership.
If you have been researching ONDA PRO vs. CoolSculpting, non-surgical fat reduction, cellulite treatments or skin tightening in Scottsdale, the best place to start is with a consultation.
We can evaluate the area, talk about what is actually bothering you and determine whether ONDA PRO makes sense for your goals.
Because sometimes it is fat. Sometimes it is cellulite. Sometimes it is skin laxity. And sometimes your body has decided to give you the combo platter.
